State of Decay Tech Demo
I have been working on a project that builds upon the beloved base-building aspect of State of Decay, exploring additional features and opportunities for player expression.
The Foundations
My tech demo recreates many of State of Decay's core base-building mechanics, including looting, resource storage, facility construction, and the day-night cycle.
What's new?
I expanded facility management by allowing players to assign community members to specific facilities. This mechanic rewards players for developing specialized characters while also making non-played community members feel active and valuable within the base.
Defenses
Just like the source material, the watchtower facility keeps your base safe by generating a safe zone around your base. Using introduced mechanics, the safe zone increases depending on your character's shooting skill and their weapon. This means that investing in a character's shooting skill continues to provide value even when the player is controlling someone else.
Why these additions?
I chose to focus on these additions because I wanted to explore a stronger connection between community members and the facilities they support. In the original system, unplayed characters would remain at the base, but the base itself functioned largely independently of who lived there. By linking facility effectiveness to individual community members, each character contributes to the survival and success of the settlement. This also gives players an additional reason to invest in developing every member of their community, rather than only their primary survivor.

Unique Problem of having and controlling characters from a small Community.
